is especially high in aluminum. Water processing plants use aluminum in tap water to kill bacteria. If we cook with aluminum pans, it may leach into our food. Be careful of aluminum both in consumption and exposure. Surprisingly, we are exposed to aluminum in many ways on a daily basis. The vaccines we give our children contain aluminum. Aluminum can be absorbed through the skin from antiperspirants.
Many early warning signs are indicative of the onset of Alzheimer's, but don't panic because you don't know where you left the car keys. Do watch for early warning signs. Items or events that are forgotten momentarily are not nearly as worrisome as "the repeated inability to remember recent, minor episodes of daily life." The person in the early stages of Alzheimer's may also demonstrate sleeplessness, agitation, wandering, anxiety, and depression. Beside symptoms to watch for, a new skin test can reveal Alzheimer's related inflammation in the skin. Once Alzheimer's is suspected and diagnosed there are both alternative and traditional drug therapies to postpone onset.
Any antioxidant, including fruit juices , vitamins E, and C, and selenium are thought to fight off free radicals that could be attacking healthy cells, including brain cells. Ginkgo biloba is thought to delay cognitive decline. Estrogen is thought to protect the brain as well. Huperzine is a natural plant extract that seems to be providing results in patients similar to FDA approved drugs on the market. Omega-3 fatty acids have anti-inflammatory properties that may reduce vascular inflammation that has been found to be associated with Alzheimer's.
Because of the connection that has been made between vascular inflammation and Alzheimer's nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) like rofecoxib (Vioxx) and naproxen (Aleve) are recommended. Other drug therapies that promise to reduce or delay symptoms include tacrine (Cognex), donepezil (Aricept), rivastigmine (Exelon), or galantamine (Razadyne, formerly known as Reminyl). Memantine (Namenda) and donepezil have both been approved by the FDA for treatment of Alzheimer's.
Dennis J. Selkoe, the Vincent and Stella Coates Professor of Neurologic Diseases at Harvard Medical School and the Brigham and Women's Hospital sums it up best, stating in a recent journal paper on Alzheimer's, "While we will no doubt experience numerous fits and starts along the way, it appears increasingly likely that a world with less Alzheimer's disease lies ahead."
