Thoughts about the "Girls Gone Wild" series

Alanis Morissette once said, "I see my body as an instrument, rather than an ornament." Such is a statement that we women ought to adhere to. Over the years, female sexuality has evolved in such a way that we no longer have to remain fashionably-chaste. We can now embrace our bodies for what they are - instruments that house our intelligence, goals and sense of being. We can also now proudly accept our bodies for their real form, in any shape or size. Progression has allowed us to speak our minds when it comes to sexual expression, no longer silenced as in the days of old, and enabled us to embrace our sexuality, our curves and ourselves as a whole. Above all, we are no longer the hood ornament or the trophy which society sees as merely decorative eye candy.

Yet, for every ounce of progression, there seems to be an equal amount of regression. When it comes to female sexual expression, regression comes in the form of three wordsthree words that have made a mockery of the female form and left such a mark on society that I fear for tomorrow's adult females: Girls Gone Wild.

We have all seen the infomercials for the Girls Gone Wild (GGW) video series, dating back to the late 1990s. As a matter of fact, the infomercials are hard to escape for anyone who watches late-night television; you lie down to watch a show at night, fall asleep mid-viewing, and awake to images of drunken, screaming, half-naked girls making out with each other on camera during spring break.

The mastermind behind Girls Gone Wild is Joe Francis. It is Francis' recent foray into the news media that has re-sparked interest in the GGW franchise. Although Francis has been wrought with scandal and allegations over the years (with accusations of rape, sexual assault, supplying minors with alcohol and using minors in sexual performances) he seems to have avoided heavy legal action. However, it seems all of the allegations are finally catching up with him. Recently, Francis was sentenced to 35 days in jail for contempt of court, indicted on tax evasion, given a $200,000 fine for record-keeping violations, sentenced to 200 community service hours, and arraigned on a sexual battery charge after allegedly fondling an 18-year old woman who had refused his advances.

Yet, before Francis was an alleged criminal, he was merely a businessman who, to the distaste of many, made his mark on society peddling skin in voyeuristic situations. The franchise has become somewhat of a cultural phenomenon, taking everyday girls
