"Everybody's gone surfing, surfing USA," a popular line from the Beach Boys song, appealed to surfers across the world, and drew attention to a small town, located on the Northern California coast, named Santa Cruz California.
After the Beach Boys published the song, the secret of Santa Cruz, as a hideaway beach town disappeared like a sunset setting at dusk.
Santa Cruz, a popular tourist town equipped with a board walk, beach festivities, and the University of California, Santa Cruz campus, is popular amongst the surfing population.
The waves cry out to young surfers, to hop on board, and ride the waves of the Pacific. Ever since the Beach Boys publicized their Surfing USA song, surfers have flocked to Santa Cruz, leaving it handicapped in it's ability to avoid crowds.
However, approximately 10 miles from Santa Cruz, is a tiny, resort town, nestled close enough to Santa Cruz to enjoy the hustle and bustle of it's charm, but far enough away to avoid the tourists flocking to the town.
Capitola, offers the same waves found in Santa Cruz without the large groups of people, competing to ride them.
After all, Santa Cruz is only 10 minutes away from Capitola, California. It's close enough to enjoy the activity in Santa Cruz, while maintaining it's privacy and charm.
Capitola offers cozy cottages at affordable prices, to rest your head at night. Often found via word of mouth, Capitola offers some spectacular deals for the surfer.
If you have forgotten the suntan lotion, the wetsuit, or even the surfboard, Capitola offers them all in it's many shops geared for the surfer.
You can ride the majestic waves of the Pacific, without all of the hustle and bustle found in Santa Cruz. The winding streets offer plenty of sidewalk cafe's for dining, and nighttime charm.
Capitola is hidden from the public view, residing quietly nearby in the shadows of Santa Cruz. Few know of it's charm. The residents like it that way.
Santa Cruz gets the glory and fame, offering tourists the best waves in the United States, while Capitola sits quietly nearby, ready to charm it's visitors.
I highly recommend Capitola, California as a surfers haven to avoid the crowds.
After you have been mesmerized by it's sunsets, quiet sandy shores, and wicked waves, you might find that you want to stay.
Soak up the sun, grab onto your surfboard, and catch the next wave in Capitola. "Everybody's gone surfing, surfing USA."
