Red wine has a number of health benefits when drunk in moderation. The idea in this country that red wine in particular is good for you came from a health study which found that there is a much lower rate of coronary heart disease in France (where they drink the most red wine per capita head anywhere in the world)than in the USA despite the fact that they have high levels of saturated fat in the many of their traditional French diet. This study of course speculated that the reason there was a very low level of heart disease in France was because of their love of wine drinking, but although there are ongoing studies into the effects of wine consumption on the heart, there is little concrete evidence at this point for the prevention of heart disease.
Some studies have found that particularly with red wine (over other kinds of alcoholic beverage), that moderate consumption can help prevent cancer and may have some benefits to the health of the heart.
These theories alone make for almost certain evidence that red wine has health benefits over other alcoholic drinks, and that you will be more healthy drinking a little of it than not.
