Feminists are individuals who believe in gender equality. Men and women who believe all of mankind should have the same rights, privileges and opportunities. Being feminist is not about being feminine; it is about being fair.
A feminist point of view can be held by both males and females. Believing in equal rights and opportunities for all its members gives our society a higher level of fairness and freedom from discriminatory attitudes.
Feminism is a hot topic of political correctness. Some men are eager to identify with the label of feminist for motives which have little to do with equality and opportunity. Other men are authentic feminist in the very core of their being and who believe deeply in equality for all
Here is a brief outline of types of male feminists and their potential motives:
* The pro-feminist male
This is an individual who truly believes in the feminist philosophy, but shies away from the title. You will not find this man marching in protests or entering into debates and conversation, but he will treat women equally, respect their rights and foster opportunities for their advancement.
* The pseudo-feminist male
This is usually a politically driven individual. If feminism is on the agenda, he will jump on the bandwagon with enthusiasm, hoping to gain approval and acceptance for whatever mission he is promoting. He will debate and argue on behalf of women's rights, not fully understanding the real issue of equality for everyone. He is in a popularity contest for his own motives.
* The Feminist by Association
These men are sincere in their beliefs. They usually have strong women in their lives; wives, daughters, close associates, and they want to make the world right for all women. Phil Donahue and Alan Alda come to mind when I think of men who are feminist by association. Both of these men were visible and credible proponents of women's rights in the '80s and their celebrity brought positive attention and action to the cause for equality.
* The True feminist man
This is a man who walks the walk, and talks the talk. Feminism is a state of mind and he resides comfortably in that state, never wavering in his beliefs. He sees the broad picture of the impact of feminism on all of society. He looks past gender and treats all people with equal respect and consideration. Whether he is at home, out in public, or on the job, his behavior toward others is consistent and non-discriminating.
There are many true feminist men and it is time for them to accept their rightful place on the roster of individuals who are an asset to the betterment of society.
