Camcorders & Digital Video Recorders

Tips for buying a camcorder

With the myriad of camcorder formats and options available today, purchasing one can be a bit of a daunting task. Before deciding on a particular model that you wish to buy, it pays to do your research. Figure out ahead of time what type of camcorder format you would like. Format has to do with what type of recordable media the camcorder uses. Basic models use built-in flash memory, while more advanced models make use of built-in hard drives, removable mini-DV tapes, or mini-DVDs. Then there's the high-definition question. Do you own an HD television? Would HD home movies be of interest to you? Each previous format has both standard-definition and high-definition versions available. Be prepared to shell out some more cash, however, if you opt for HD.

When you've figured out a format and answered the high-def question, determining the features that you want is next. Again, doing some research into the various features is your best weapon in this arena. Be wary of digital zoom. It tends to degraded quality. If you plan on shooting relatively close-up home movies of the kids, then perhaps an inexpensive model with digital zoom is all that you need. But if the idea of being able to draw in faraway scenery through your lens sounds exciting, then you best consider your options with optical zoom. Ease of connectivity to a PC, digital snapshot mode, and other features are all items you may want to consider before deciding on what camcorder to buy.

Conducting your research is as easy as logging on to www.circuitcity.com or www.bestbuy.com. These websites can answer a multitude of questions regarding format, features, etc. These websites also allow you to comparison shop and check prices. An in-store visit may also be helpful. It has been my experience that Best Buy associates tend to be more friendly than those at Circuit City. If the option is available, consider visiting both stores and picking the sales associate's brain. Get all of your questions answered, and do some price comparisons while you're at it. Don't neglect Sunday paper sales flyers either. Best Buy, Circuit City, and other retailers publish their best deals and rebates in the Sunday circulars. If buying used doesn't bother you, consider asking a sales associate about purchasing a display or demo model. This is how I got a great deal on a Panasonic camcorder years ago. Usually the demo model carries the same warranty as a brand-new one, but costs a lot less. Be sure to verify this before purchase.

Other big-box retailers like Target or Sam's Club (if you're a member) may also offer some good deals on camcorders, assuming you can find the one you're looking for. Selection is more limited in these stores, but if you find a suitable model on their shelves, this may be the route for you.

If eBay offers some lucrative deals on the camcorder that you want, be vigilant before you make a purchase. Read all the fine print in the auction ad. Be sure to investigate the seller's feedback. Many camera stores, a majority of which always seem to be concentrated in New York City, offer rock-bottom prices on new models. They also usually include some extra goodies in the package such a tripod, carrying case, cleaning kit, etc. I personally purchased a digital still camera through one of these eBay camera merchants, and had satisfying results.

Shooting quality home movies and preserving family memories is no longer an expensive, out-of-reach task. With some prudent research, you too can be assured of landing yourself the camcorder you want at the price you want to pay.
