Nascar's Car of Tomorrow: Good racing or bad

We are now more than halfway through the 2007 NASCAR season, and the hopes for the Car of Tomorrow have never come to fruition. When we look back on this season in later years, what will be the one thing we remember? For me, it will be watching Kyle Busch climb out of the car and promptly reply, "it sucks". Yes, it does.

How many of us watch in excited anticipation during the IROC races? That is what is in danger of happening in NASCAR. Though we might not like to admit it, we all (or most of us) get a little excited watching cars wreck, and rooting for our favorite driver. With the COT, everyone is playing on an equal level.

After the race in Bristol, Jeff Gordon claimed that the car allowed for a second lane of passing, a feat not usually seen at the track. The problem with that assumption though, is believing that it came from the car itself, and not the changes made to the track.

Another issue is the design of the car. Right now fans can still root for their favorite manufacturer and it is relatively easy to spot the Chevy vs. the Ford, or the Dodge vs. the Toyota. Next year, this will be a thing of the past. The COT all looks alike, to the point where the fans that hate Toyota, will have a hard time telling the difference between their Camry and a Chevy Impala.

The COT is doing little to help NASCAR, but doing a lot to change it. With viewership down overall, beginning with this year's Daytona 500, making the sport less exciting is not the way to help the sport. When your biggest stars are speaking out against the car, there's a problem there.
