The significance of school rankings? Does it really matter? If it isn't one of the top Ivy League school is there really anything to rank after that?

I actually thought about this today after a snide remark by a co-worker. Basically there was a "battle of the wits" and I won, LOL . However to redeem themselves the co-worker replied "That must be something they taught you at Devry!"

WOW! I was amazed yet baffled. Was the co-working insulting my alma mater or my intelligence in general? Does the university a person attends really make the person?

I knew walking in to Devry University it already had a stigma because of its humble vocational beginnings (something the school has yet to live down). However they are accredited and have a few state of the art technology programs. Generally speaking the university does turn out some impressive graduates.

In any case this got me thinking, do employers really pay attention to the name and ranking of the college you attend? Or is it how well you sell yourself and take what you has learned and apply it to the job.

Actually my current employer commended me on pressuring my education and future education, not on my choice of school. So in this case this proved to me that it's really the drive and ambition of the student not the ranking or standing.

Has anyone else experience this type of situation?
