Dyslexia is, quite literally, difficulty with reading. Contrary to popular belief, having dyslexia does not necessarily mean that you see letters turned around or upside down when you look at them. While this certainly can be one of the symptoms, it is not the only one. Any difficulty with learning to read could technically fit into the category we call dyslexia. The school district where I teach has a policy of not identifying anyone as having dyslexia. I've been told by some that it's a "medical diagnosis", but you it can't be identified by a blood test or even a brain scan. The causes for dyslexia and other learning disabilities are not really known. Some research suggests that there could be some genetic tendency and others believe learning disabilities are caused by "mis-wiring" in a young child's developing brain. The best treatment for dyslexia is even less clear than its cause. There are many good hands on and phonemic based programs available, but success with any of these will depend on the individual child. A child will not grow out of dyslexia, but they can usually learn to compensate as they get older. Reading will probably always be difficult for them.
