When it comes to moving, there are better times than others to get it done in the United States. Be aware of such things as weather, students, congested holiday travel and fluctuations in the availability and cost of property before you begin.
The middle of the month is a better time to undertake anything in the moving industry for the simple reason that most leases begin and end as the months do. If you are purchasing a new home, plan to have your closing on the 10th and do your moving mid-month. That would make you the smartest person on your new block. Also, remember that housing costs rise and fall, seasonally, with increases in materials and labor costs. Buy your next new home during the summer.
The time of year should also impact when you pack-up and move out. Picture the rain and ask yourself how much of your furniture would be adversely affected by getting wet. If you live in Seattle, move at night. Seriously, the rainy season in your area absolutely should affect the timing of your decision to move. In the South, avoid moving in August and September because you will get wet. Also, skip January because you will get cold and wet. In the rest of the country, skip April. Don't move in the rain if you can help it. Consult an online almanac (www.weather.com, www.droughtmonitor.com , www.almanac.com,) or go to the book store and plan ahead.
The availability of rental housing depends greatly upon the semester system. College students occupy apartments and they use rental moving trucks to get in and out. Think twice before you plan a move toward the end of August or beginning of September and the same goes for the entire month of May. Students control the moving movement at the beginning and end of their regular semesters.
Highway and motel traffic will be tremendously congested if you plan a moving trip during particular weekends. Avoid holidays, regardless of the fact that you may have more time off from work. You will lose time if you try to go anywhere using the highways on Spring Break (March), Easter (early April), Mothers' Day or Memorial Day (May), independence day is not a big highway holiday, Labor Day (beginning of September), Thanksgiving (end of November), and Christmas or Hanukkah (end of December). Combining holiday concerns with your efforts to dodge the migration of students, the best time of the year to move in the U.S. is January and February, summer, then mid September through mid November.
Move in the summertime and you will miss the rain, the students and the holidays!
