Yellowstone National Park in Wyoming is perhaps one of the most beautiful natural treasures that the United States possesses, and therefore a visit to this amazing park makes for a wonderful family vacation. As with all National Parks, Yellowstone is on a whole pretty "kid friendly", and there are so many different types of accommodations (from rustic camping to luxury hotel suites) in vast and varying locations that one will surely speak to you and your family.
CAMPING
Camping in Yellowstone is a truly wonderful experience. There is nothing like being out in the "great outdoors", sleeping beneath the stars, cooking over a real, live campfire, and being only a minutes walk from all of the wonderful "wide open spaces". Whether you have an RV or are planning to pitch an old fashioned tent, there are five major camping areas in Yellowstone: Bridge Bay Campground, Canyon Campground, Grant Village Campground, Madison Campground and Fishing Bridge RV Park. A few years back, my sister-in-law and her family spent some time "tent camping" in the Bridge Bay Campground, and they absolutely loved it! They raved about how close they were to nature and also how convenient it was to get to several of the "dining" areas, as well as bathrooms that offered very clean coin operated showers.
LODGES
If you're looking to take a step up from the traditional tent or RV camping, there are several wonderful Lodges in the park. There are lodges available for both "summer" and "winter" visits, though there are many Summer Lodges and only two major Winter Lodges. Listed below are some of the Summer Lodges, as well as the Winter Lodges that are available. One thing to keep in mind is that most of the accommodations in Yellowstone do not feature televisions, radios, Internet access, etc.
SUMMER
The "Canyon Lodge and Cabins" are centrally located near the Grand Canyon of Yellowstone as well as some spectacular waterfalls. This lodge is rustic and cozy at the same time, and offers dining and activities, including horseback riding, close by. There are several different "cabins" available, all slightly different, but all quaint and comfortable.
The "Old Faithful Inn" is located, you guessed it, near Old Faithful, one of the most famous natural wonders in the United States. This lodge is rustic and cozy, but also features a deli and a full-service restaurant. My In-Laws stayed at this lodge a couple of years back, and they were extremely impressed.
