Deciding when it is time for you to move is hard because you may be too close to the center of the storm and your perspective is skewed. You sense an impalpable level of discomfort among members of your family, but you can't quite put your finger on the proper solution. Guidance is at hand; in other words: You know it's time to move when:
Your children have stopped asking if their friends may sleep over. It's not that you don't order pizza well. It's not that none of their friends likes to go to church with you on Sunday. The issue is that you already have both of your children sleeping in the same room and they are twelve and fourteen. Face the facts: your children need more space and so do you: move.
Or, you home office is occupying a room of your house when you could better use the space for your third child who is still sleeping in your bedroom with you and your spouse. Get real. The baby is growing and it's time that you did the same: move.
Or, your family game room has expanded to the very threshold of spilling into your linen closet and there is no relief in sight because everyone in your family likes games and playtime. And, your family is already double-stacked in one of your children's bedrooms and your third child is starting to look at your home office because it is bigger than his bedroom. Come on! Just because you can fit a pool table into what is really a bedroom doesn't mean you should. You need a house with a basement or a real den: move.
Or, your dog (or is it already dogs, plural?) is showing signs of nervous anxiety thanks to living in an apartment. While the linoleum floor in the kitchen is a great distraction for a dog who would like to dig, you will have much less fun when you have to replace it. Face the facts; face the music; face your future in a house with a yard: move.
Or, is it you? Are you driving into the city every Thursday and Friday because you seek out the best restaurants and bars in your reach? Do you thirst for nightlife? Is your problem that you live in a town where there is nothing open after dark? Instead, is it that you are living in a dry county but you enjoy sipping malted beverages while you watch football? Is action what defines your leisure hours, but you have to spend forty-five minutes driving to find it? Come clean with yourself about what you enjoy: move downtown.
Or, did the last passage make you laugh? Are you aggravated taking your dog out using an elevator? Are you exhausted by the hustling masses walking up and down the sidewalk of your high-rise? Does it seem that you know your doorman better than you know your neighbors? Do you have a favorite parking lot? Get out of here! No, really: move out of the city.
Please. Don't let the lighthearted nature of this guide detract from the truth. Many who read this are wearing blinders in your homes. You are outgrowing your homestead. Give comfort a chance and admit the fact that you no longer fit into the space you occupy. Call a realtor. Talk with your family. Sit yourself down and think things over. Change is good for the soul, especially when you have needed it and did not notice.
