Assessing the real cost of moving

Moving can be an exceptionally taxing chore unless you decide early on to view it as an adventure and a time of positive growth. Moving is about improving your lifestyle. Here is an assessment of the real cost of moving.

The stress of upheaval should be recognized and addressed early and often. Both children and adults will experience discomfort at some point during the evolution of moving. Even good things produce stress that is taxing and real. Leaving friends, changing gyms, losing a gardenall of these will make the new environment something of a challenge for a while. Handling adjustments in life will drain you and your family and these are some of the real costs of moving.

Money going out is what most people count when they try to measure the expense of anything, but there are more important considerations: nerves and savings. Moving is a trying event and it will wear on your anxiety level. This is one of the real costs of moving. You will do well to remember that you were also doing yourself some serious nerve damage by staying where you were. The good news is that the stress of moving will go away when you begin to feel comfortable in your new surroundings. The old anxiety of living in cramped quarters or living in an environment you were no longer enjoying would never cease to grate on you until you moved. By doing something about your previous discomfort, you are reducing your overall stress level. Things are going to get better.

In money terms, the cost of your new home must be compared with the expense of staying where you were. You may be moving into a new arrangement that is, for example, $1,500 per month. Let's say your old place was costing you $1,150 plus a storage shed of $75 and other expenses that will be gone soon (like eating out or babysitters or parking or commuting.) There are many expenses you may not have to pay in the future, because you have moved to an area that better accommodates your lifestyle. When you compare the actual increased cost of living at the new place to the improvement in your standard of living (read: higher level of comfort) at your new place, it will be much easier to live with.

Moving expenses are real and they can be high. On the upper end, people pay from $6,500 to $20,000 to transfer their personal property from one very large house to another. Compare your moving expenses to how much you were wasting before you moved. Again, these are things like storage units, commuting, eating out, getting away, entertainmentmany of these expenses will be significantly reduced now that your living arrangements more closely match your lifestyle. Compare the relevant numbers after you have settled in for a few months and you will easily be able to justify the cash outlay it cost you to move.

Uncertainty is an area the gives people nightmares. If someone in your family is moving without already having a new job, this is serious. Brace yourselves for an adjustment. Also, the things you have been doing for fun in the past have probably been satisfied based on geographyyou have been going to a particular place to recreate, to socialize, to relax, to hide. Everyone in your family will have to find new places to have fun.

Relocation takes time and it will cost you more than you realize. You will be searching for comfort in your new surroundings well after the boxes are unpacked. Make yourself comfortable by identifying the things you miss and find reasonable substitutes. This is your life. Stretch out and get comfortable.
