I'm not one to rely on the thoughts of Lee Corso or that other handsome gentleman from Ohio State. I want to find my own sleepers, and the ACC has plenty of solid but not spectacular teams, which means there is no obvious lock for conference champion.
Naturally, teams with impressive conference records are rewarded with the opportunity to play in bigger, more high-stakes games. So, I combed through the six conferences that make up the BCS, identified all conference games and speculated on their outcomes. Teams facing three or more games as heavy underdogs were scratched from the list, and those with two or fewer scheduled matchups made the first cut.
Lo and behold, the ACC is wide open. I'm relying on strength of schedule here.
Boston College gets no free passes by playing Duke or North Carolina, but faces only one obvious underdog game when they travel to Blacksburg on October 25. In the same realm, Wake Forest's toughest matchup looks to be its opener at BC. A home game with FSU and late road tilts at Virginia and Clemson are challenges but not impossible. Georgia Tech appears to offer a huge bang for the buck in regard to odds. Their two big challenges - Virginia Tech and Boston College - will roll into Bobby Dodd Stadium and square off against the Yellow Jackets and their 20-1 odds. This isn't to take away from the talent level of VT and BC, but considering the utter free-for-all in the ACC and the absence of dominant road opponents, Georgia Tech's ride to a potential conference championship is a little more comfortable than their competitors.
