THE GREAT PRETENDER

Tonight I must pretend you don't matter.
Tonight I must momentarily dismiss all these torturous thoughts of you
And smile into the face of a man I wish had your eyes.
Tonight I will laugh my laugh and smile my smile in this great game of pretend. Pretending I could someday feel for him
One fraction of the devotion I still feel for you.

Tonight we will watch a movie at the same theater I went to with you.
I will try not to remember your tender shiver when I rubbed your arm.
I will try not to remember your goofy, loveable laughter in my ear.
I will squint at him in the dark and pretend it's your face I see.

Tonight when we say goodnight I will wish I was kissing your lips instead.
I will wish his kiss made me weak in the knees like yours did.
I will go to my lonely bed and instead of the rush of a new romance with him,
I will dream of a stale romance with you,
In this great game of pretend.
