How do we really define a relationship?

I've been in a number of relationships' throughout my life and quite understandably not one has been similar. And by saying similar I mean no two relationships have ever had the same qualities. Yes the same activities have taken place; dinner, movies, drinks, sex, but each time it is with a different person, therefore the outcome is bound to be different. Whether it's better or worse than the one before is entirely in the hands of the Gods, you just have to sit back and enjoy the ride

There are so many forms of relationship' that it becomes more and more difficult to determine which one you are in. Even the dictionary has trouble defining it as there is no definition under relationship', relation yes, relations yes, relationship no. Therefore we make our own interpretations.
Having been in long relationships, short relationships and just sexual relationships, I am always amused at the idea that each category has its own set of rules and regulations. Of course it's the individuals involved that make up the real rules and regulations, we just have a general guideline that we are advised' to follow.
Whether you are with someone full time or just merely seeing' them, it is still technically a relationship, because in some way or another you are connected.
Depending on the context, when we hear somebody talk of a relationship we automatically assume that they are referring to a girlfriend or boyfriend. Therefore can we believe that there is only room for one real relationship and that is with the person whom we have the strongest and most affectionate feelings towards? If this is the case, then defining the relationship would depend on the level of affection we experience. If you're just fooling around with someone, you tend not to be too concerned with their thoughts, feelings, emotions, you enjoy their company, and in general have fun, but that's it, there is no real consideration or commitment. If you choose to be with someone on a more serious level then you have to take everything mentioned above more seriously. It's not only yourself you have to think about, but the other person too, their thoughts, their feelings, their emotions, and when they are affected by something you often are too.
What type of relationship you have depends on what kind of person you are and what stage of life you're at, but at some point or another everybody experiences a relationship at multiple levels.
For me, I am at the stage in my life where
