Emotions:
No matter how much preparation you've taken or how friendly your terms have been with each other your children are going to experience a range of emotions. Allow them to feel these emotions and explain that it is ok to be sad or angry or hurt. Give them the freedom to ask questions or to talk about how they are feeling. Don't be afraid to show your own emotions, it is reassuring to know that others can feel the way they do but it is also important to show that those emotions make you stronger.
There really is no right way to break such information to your kids. Divorce is never easy. No matter how dangerous or emotionally unstable a marriage has been the dissolving of a family is an experience filled with overwrought emotions and challenges. The whole family will have to learn how to live with the changes and to accept the new status.
Children suffer more than others and it can affect every aspect of their lives. Be prepared, be understanding, and be open to all of this. Be adaptable and go with the flow. Be loving and considerate. It is hard for you, it is hard for them, but in the long term you will all recover and be stronger than ever. With understanding and patience you could even forge relationships that are strengthened by your mutual experiences and lead happier, healthier lives.
