To maintain health men, women and children all need a rich and varied supply of vitamins and minerals. Most of these should be provided by a person's diet. However at certain times in our life a vitamin and mineral supplement can be beneficial. Just as women need additional B vitamins Folic Acid, and possibly Iron, throughout their child bearing years, men need some vitamins and minerals in particular. Adult men often have stressful work and have many demands placed upon them. In theory men can aim to get their vital nutrients from food, however if that is not possible here are a few vitamin supplements which may prove invaluable.
Folic Acid
There is research which suggests Folic Acid can cut the risk of Alzheimer's disease. Although this is not a 100% fact it definitely won't hurt to eat food rich in Folic Acid or take a vitamin supplement which includes it.
Calcium
Calcium is needed as much by men as women to maintain strong and healthy bones.
Glucosamine
Glucosamine will help to keep joints mobile as you grow older. I take glucosamine, with added chondroitin. This can really help to keep muscles and joints strong and moving well.
Omega 3
Omega 3 fatty acids are believed to help keep blood pressure down and maintain a healthy heart. There has been some contradictory evidence lately but, cardiologists still give out this advice.
Selenium
Selenium appears to be good mineral for the prevention cancer. Eat Brazil nuts to receive a steady supply of selenium.
Vitamin E
Vitamin E is reputed to help slow down the aging process and maintain good skin.
Creatinine
Creatinine will help to boost your memory and muscle strength, but you must use caution when taking this as a supplement.
Boron
Apparently Boron, which can be found in Raisins and Almonds, can reduce the risk of men developing Prostate Cancer.
Vitamin C
Vitamin C is necessary to all ages. If a man smokes he should take a Vitamin C supplement, as the smoking will reduce the benefits of any Vitamin C he consumes in his diet.
Vitamin A
Vitamin A is also necessary to maintain good health.
Please note
Caution should be exercised with supplements which contain Iron as too much can be detrimental.
Overall
I discovered most of the above during my nine years working as a hospital administrator. As always you should never take additional vitamins without checking with your doctor. They can interfere with any prescribed medication that you may also be taking. Never exceed the recommended dose either. A good all round supplement should be fine.
Many vitamin and mineral supplements actually state on the labels these days whether they are made with men or women in mind. However try to eat plenty of leafy green vegetables, a mixture of red vegetables and as much variety of fruit as you can. If you do this and incorporate lean meat, a handful of nuts and seeds, and some dairy products you won't go too far wrong.
