TIPS For Finding a GOOD Brake Mechanic.
1. Brake & Muffler Franchises
- Work done by a Franchised Company is one of your best options as they will give you a National Warranty with their work. This means if you have a brake failure, 1200 miles from home, the nearest Franchise will put things back in order, and have you on your way, free of charge.
2. Yellow Pages.
- A company in the Yellow Pages Indicates they are in there for the long haul. Yellowpages ads are paid for months in advance, which eliminates many of "Fly by nighters". Big is not always best, but does indicate they have a large customer base, which in turn means that they may have hot offers. Check if they offer a Warranty with their work, and remember, you will not have the same Warranty coverage as you would with a Franchise.
4. A Friend\Mechanic
- This can be a huge saving, and I have gone this route several times. I paid for the parts, and gave "The Mechanic" $50 or $100. In one instance, instead of cash, I bought him a case of beer. This is perfectly OK if the person knows what they are doing and has the right equipment. But Just remember, you are on your own if you encounter troubles, and they may take longer to complete the work, and possible need outside help if the Disks need machining/honing.
5. Ask you most trusted friend
- If you are new to the area, talk to one of your friends, or Flatmate etc, and ask them where they get the Brake work done. Were they satisfied with the work carried out on their car? Were they happy with the work? were they treated with respect?
HOT TIP.
If you have time, park in the car park of the workshop, before booking, and observe what goes on. Does the building and workshop look professional? or is it a Pig Sty? Are the Employees working, or are they all together goofing off with cigarettes hanging from their mouth? If that is the case, chances are they will take shortcuts and not take your repair seriously.
