I like a good "slobberknocker", in the words of Jim Ross, as much as the next man. I've been a wrestling fan since the first time i sat down with my dad to watch what was known as the WWF back then. I was there every Sunday morning to watch guys like Ricky "the Dragon" Steamboat, the Great Muta, Rowdy Roddy Piper, the immortal Hulk Hogan, the enormously talented tag team of Terry and Kevin VonErick and the list could go on and on. I could probably use this space to run down all the greats that ever laced up boots and squared off in the squared circle if i wanted to. I've seen alot of guys come and go in the professional wrestling world. Regardless of what you think about wrestling, real or staged it cannot be denied that these men are athletes.
I can remember in the early days, while they had story lines to follow, there was more wrestling than talking. It was a soap opera for guys! The stories were fresh and exciting. I never got tired of watching the battles between Hulk Hogan and the Ultimate Warrior. I watched on with intensity as the Legion of Doom grinded it out with Demolition on a regular basis. I never laughed harder in my life than when watching the rowdy one conduct interviews on pipers pit that usually ended up with him getting embarrassed in one way or another. Even though i knew it was all an act, i always felt embedded in the story by the end of the Sunday morning broadcast, i was on the edge of my seat and couldn't seem to wait for longer than 10 minutes to find out what on earth was going to happen next week.
Wherever WWE is headed these days is anyone's guess. I don't feel the excitement that i used to back in the day. I think the stories have gone down hill in a big way. I don't think that where they are going is going to lead anywhere good. The WWE has resulted to cheap parlor style tricks, shock value isn't what it used to be. What i've noticed is that they are recycling story lines, none of which are endearing... at least to me. I understand that entertainers have to cater to their ever evolving fanbase, but how much is too much? I don't feel the connection to the John Cena's or Randy Orton's that i felt to the early Rick Flair's and Jerry Lawler's. The guys i remember were iron men. These men worked everynight, those same guys were on every telecast and minor injuries didn't stop them from showing up to work. At the end of todays WWE pay per views i walk away feeling ripped off in some ways.
Sure the pyro-technics have gotten bigger, RAW has gotten flashier, athletes are genetic freaks of nature these days. Does that mean the entertainment value has increased? I don't think so, i think the WWE tried to fix something that wasn't broke in the first place. Bring back the feeling i had after watching the monumental clash of titans between Hogan and the Ultimate Warrior. I wand to feel like i was part of something much bigger than myself.
