For many, many years - I was one of the poor, on welfare. I am not wealthy now, I simply earn a living. Regardless of whether I got my money from welfare or, whether I earned it - I am, and always will be, a human being first.
The reality is that, people who receive welfare are treaty very poorly. They are discriminated against - for their social status, or should I say - lack of social status. The truth is though, most of us who have been or are currently in the welfare system, regardless of the country in which we live - are a damn site more careful, with their funds than the average Joe.
I have three sons. They have always had healthy appetites and, so have I. I had to make my money go a long, long ways. I started with the farmers nearby. I would buy eggs from them. They sold them cheaper than the grocery store but, were exactly the same product. Farmers, less than four hours away - grew potatoes. I would buy them by the seventy five pound sack - instead of the pretty little plastic bags, available at the grocery stores. Every Fall, I would buy a hind of beef from a nearby slaughter house. It was all packaged in brown wrapper. It sure ate just as well, for a fraction of the price.
I would accept second hand clothes for my sons and myself. They were in good shape and, most of them still had store tags on them. They had been purchased by the previous owner but, they never found time to wear them. We received many, many high compliments on our attire. Imagine that! They would compliment us until, they found out my source of income - that is. How ridiculous!
Those on social assistance or welfare, raise your head - stand proud. You are doing the best you can, with what you have. There is no shame in being a good parent - ask those with money. Good parents are good people. They care. I have every confidence that, when you were young - you did not think for even a moment that, you would grow up to be a 'welfare' parent. Its not something you chose, rather - it is what you were dealt in the hand of life. Play your best - you will make it - someday.
In the meantime - no one can make you feel bad about yourself, without your permission. Don't let them! Stand tall and proud! Welfare recipients are - people first.
