The answer is and always will be cats. Yes there are joys and pleasures to having each, but for me, cats win, hands down. Here is the reasoning behind why I, personally prefer cats.
1. Cats are generally calmer. I'm referring to hyperness when I say "calm." I didn't grow up with dogs, so when I go to the house of someone that has big dogs, I get kind of annoyed when they jump all over me and try to lick me.
2. It is just as likely that you can find an evil dog as it is that you'll find a cat that doesn't like its owners. It's easier to stay away from an ornery cat, and dogs can do much more harm, especially if they're big dogs. For instance, my boyfriend's brother has a dog that doesn't like tall males, and he'll bite them.
3. This should have been listed as #1, but oh well. Cats are so much easier to take care of. You can leave town for a few days, leave big bowls of food and water, and the cat is fine. Cats are way more independent, and they also will not tear everything up when you leave.
4. Cats really don't care much for people food unless you are eating some type of meat. Even then, they'll sit and stare at you and that's about it. Dogs on the other hand, think that they are entitled to people food. They'll sit with their head in your lap and bark and drool.
5. Dog lovers always argue that dogs are more trainable. Yes that is true, and that is really cool that you can train dogs to be, say police dogs and that. However, I really don't care about those skills in my own pet. I am satisfied to watch a cat play with a toy mouse. If you throw a toy mouse to my sister's cat Sherbert, he'll do a flip in the air to get it. That is hilarious, and I'd take that over having a dog that can sit and shake hands.
6. Another thing dog lovers argue is that dogs are more affectionate. In fact, my friend who grew up with dogs was unsure if she should get cats when she moved out on her own because of that reason. She got some cats and now she has converted to a cat lover.
Cats can be very affectionate and loving. Take my parents' cat Pumpkin. He will roll around and purr every time I visit my parents, and he also did that all the time when I lived there. Yes, cats can be choosy about when they want attention, but hey, there's times when you want to be left alone too, aren't there?
7. Cats are naturally litter box trained. They generally will not leave messes around the house. They might if their litter box is dirty, but that would be their owner's fault. Cats will not wake you up in the middle of the night or early morning when you want to sleep in so that they can go to the bathroom.
Also when it comes to messes, dogs will tear things up as puppies. My friend recently had an elaborately constructed photo album get torn up by her 14 month old yellow lab. The worst a cat would do is lay on it and get a little hair on it.
And those are my reasons. What can I say? I just like cats better. I'm not totally anti-dog and may someday even end up with one because of my boyfriend, but I'd still much rather just have cats.
