Whether God-hating atheist activists like it or not, the Bible is part of America's Christian society and we must continue to respect it. That means continuing to use it- exclusively - to administer oaths. It is not simply a book of ancient rules but an essential guide to life that is as relevant today as it was 2000 years ago.
Traditions matter. That includes our faith tradition, which allows other faiths and those who believe in no faith to have equal treatment under the law. This tradition is rare since the United States does not have an official church. This may come as a shock to those who constantly hear the irrational caterwauling of those labeling the US as a 'theocracy,' but the fact remains that the US was settled by people who were fleeing religious persecution in their native countries.
One of those countries was Great Britain, which had, and still does have, a state-sponsored church: the Church of England. Ironically, the same folks who decry America's alleged theocracy status are the same ones who say that we should be more like the nations of Europe - most of which have some kind of state-sponsored church.
America was founded on the idea of liberty and that our rights are God-given, not government given. That's why we must continue to affirm His place in our lives by preserving the tradition of Bible swearing-in ceremonies.
