Tips for storing furniture

Unless you are able to store your furniture in your attic, basement, or garage you should use a climate controlled private storage unit. Next best is an enclosed, personal storage device such as a huge crate or container within a warehouse. Do not allow your furniture to be stored in an open warehouse.

Open warehouses are not recommended for the storage of furniture because workers will be moving freight in and out of nearby bins. This will eventually cause your belongings to get bumped, scratched or broken. Furthermore, open warehouses are filled with dust to a much greater degree than your privately used container or storage unit.

All long term furniture storage options must minimize your furniture's exposure to dust. Therefore, you must completely cover all upholstered surfaces by wrapping them tightly and securing the covering with tape. Preferably, a large furniture bag should be draped over each piece, individually. These furniture bags are plastic and they are designed to be secured at the bottom, around the legs of the furniture. You can also use heavy furniture pads as long as all surfaces are tightly and thoroughly covered. Make these dust preparations as airtight as possible because over time, dust will get everywhere.

Finally, protect against the effects of humidity over time. Mildew will set in, through the air, if you allow humidity to settle into your upholstered furniture. It is for this reason that many storage facilities boast air-conditioning and climate controlled atmospheres. These are the best long term furniture storage options and are well worth the extra money.
