Memoirs: September 11, 2001

It is 6 AM on September 11, 2002, one year after the terrible tragedy in the United States. It is a dark day on the fluttering shadow of a tree in front of my window I can see that it is a windy day. Today, no sunshine wakes me up. Instead, I am awakened by the television replays of last year's September 11th attacks and interviews of people who lost a loved one. My eyes slowly fill with tears as I remember this horrible event. I shut off the television and get ready for the day.

Although it seems as if this terrible tragedy happened just yesterday, a year has already passed since the terrorist attacks on the United States. While some people have moved on, others still struggle, trying to deal with the aftermath. I was not affected directly, but I remember how awful it was to watch the twin towers fall.
September 11, 2001 started out as an ordinary day. I picked up a cup of tea on my way to school and attended my usual Tuesday morning English class. Suddenly, a professor entered the classroom in the Sawyer building, her face expressing fear and pain. She began to weep as she explained that we had just been attacked. The class was silent, none of us able to comprehend what she had just said. It was only after I had gone home and began to watch the news that I understood the enormity of the event.

Although nobody I know died in this tragedy, I was still shocked to see two airplanes hit the World Trade Center. It was horrible to watch the desperation of the victims as they began to jump from the burning buildings. It was frightening to see the powerful twin towers fall and realize that thousands of innocent people were trapped underneath the rubble. I grieved.

A month later, I visited ground zero in New York. Overlooking the destruction, I was devastated to see the shattered remains of the two high tech buildings, once so strong and powerful. I could still smell the ashes left behind and I felt a somber mood among the visitors who came from all over the world to see the empty space that once symbolized the skyline of New York City. And yet, although it was an empty field between the skyscrapers of the city, it was full of sympathy, support and solace.

In front of ground zero, people created a huge collage with mementos from 9/11, including flowers, candles, photographs of lost ones, poems and letters. The rest of the country shared their support by volunteering at ground zero, in soup kitchens and in hospitals. Moreover, the United States obtained condolences and support
