Antidepressants: Does it take time before they work?

Most antidepressants take at least 4-6 weeks before they start to work. Some will take over two months to be fully active in your blood stream. While each prescription is different, doctors usually tell patients to not expect initial results for 4-6 weeks. Unfortunately, however, many people do experience the adverse side effects within the first few days.

Having patience is very important when you start your medication. One must not expect the first medication to be a perfect fit, as many people do end up requiring either new prescriptions, or additional medication to accompany their antidepressants. Some people notice intense side effects during the first few weeks, and many wish to discontinue taking their medication, but that is not advisable. Always consult a doctor before stopping medication. Pharmacists are also a great [and free] resource that are largely under-used and under-recognized; they can answer any questions you have about your medication.

The effectiveness of medication will be much faster if one does not rely on it primarily for recovery. Studies show that most people fare better by using a combination of talk therapy with their prescribed medication. Since there is such a wait time before your medication starts to work, it is a great time to get into support groups, counseling, yoga, etc. Looking for healthy lifestyle changes is a great way to pass the time.
