How to help your child with science

The world of science is filled with wonder and amazement! Did you ever think about how many drops of nectar it takes to make a whole container of honey? Or what it would be like to actually visit the moon? What about finding a cure for cancer? Or discovering a new species? At some point in your child's life they will wonder about these things and much more. It is important for parents and teachers to foster that inquisitive nature in children and to help them find answers to the questions they ask about science.

In elementary school, science is all about discovery and learning things for the first time. They will be excited about science because it is new for them. There will be minimal testing during the early years and probably not much homework except for projects and reports. You can help your child by gathering information on topics through the library, Internet, and encyclopedias. Help your child grasp the facts that their teacher wants them to learn. If your child asks questions about science, help them find the answers. When you investigate science with them, you will be amazed at how much they learn and they will desire to learn more.

During middle school and high school science often times becomes something they have to learn to pass an exam or lab test. Your child may loose the curiosity they once had for science because it may have become too overwhelming or they have a teacher that does not bring science to life. If this is the case, do everything you can to keep science alive in your child. Help them study for tests. Have them write the facts on note cards and then quiz them whenever you have a chance. Let them invite a friend over to study for the next exam. When they have a science project or report, help them enjoy the learning process. Take them to the library or local science museum to investigate the topic. Do online research and find everything you can about the topic. Make the process fun for them and they will learn from the experience and not just memorize facts. When you are interested in science they will be too!

Science can be fun, exciting and an opportunity to enrich your child's learning. Help your child to broaden their knowledge by investigating science with them. There are many resources available out there and together with your child you can keep science alive!
