Advertisements do use sex to sell their products, but there seems to be confusion as to why that degrades women. To put it simply, it is because it reduces a human being to the level of a mere physical object, the same as a couch or a piece of furniture.
It is the logical conclusion one sees from evolutionary theory or humanism, that people are nothing more than complex computers, nothing more than the sum of their parts. And if you view people as nothing more than robots or mere objects, than you can treat them as such; without inherent worth or value.
If women are nothing more than objects, than there is nothing to degrade. But, if as I believe, they have souls as do we all, than it is wrong to view them as nothing more than objects or animals.
And this, this is all at the core of what is so wrong with America. We focus on ourselves and are taught by the media to see others as objects good only for our personal gratification. This is why the divorce rate skyrocketed from what it once was, and why there are so many single parents now.
People confuse lust and love. They think simply having an emotion, and treating the other person as an object simply to be used for their self-gratification, whether to get an emotional "high" or "energy" from them, sexual pleasure, money, or the comfort of having another person around (in other words, to satisfy an emotional need).
But do you see the common thread here? It has become all about what the other person can do for us. We need to get the focus off ourselves and make it about the other person. People are not objects. God tells us in the Bible that the great commandments are love for God, and love for other people.
In short - it's not about us. We are called to love other people as ourselves. To care about others, not ourselves. This is diametrically opposed to the selfish American worldview which says "it is all about you" or "do what feels good to you."
Think about it. It is selfishness incarnate that the American media is selling to people. It is teaching people to abuse and take advantage of their fellow human beings because all that matters is making themselves feel good.
But there is a core truth, that if we act only on our own behalf, we will never find anything of true and lasting value. If we treat others with such a shallow, Me-first perspective, we can never hope to find anything but shallow relationships and merely physical rewards.
You see, Love is not about an emotional feeling - It is about the other person.
