Iran's human rights problems: Past and present

Silence of the Lambs
The latest disappointing news from Iran indicates that the human right situation has severely deteriorated.
The pressure on the politically active, especially students and journalists has become much greater. The number of executions and hangings in public places has increased. Many political activists including two journalists, Adnan Hassanpur and Hiwa Botimar sentenced to death by the Iranian Islamic regime and will be executed soon. Also nearly twenty youths aged under 18 are awaiting execution and based on some reports, 4 women awaiting stoning. Those students who have been arrested have also been severely tortured, according to their families' statements and some have disappeared.


In such horrific circumstances the silence of the world, in particular Europe, is deafening although about a month ago the French foreign minister announced that recent mass execution in Iran is unacceptable. However the regime immediately responded saying that it is a domestic matter and other countries cannot interfere. It clearly sends a message for both the world and the Iranian people that the regime will simply do as it likes-torture, execute etc. without any fear or shame whatsoever.
This is a stark warning for all those who respect human rights and humanity as a whole.
Despite everything I believe there is an undercurrent of the smell of freedom coming from my beloved Iran now more than ever before. The age of such a dictatorship and criminal regime is nearly over and in my opinion even the regime is aware of this.
In such a moment as this, it is acutely essential that the world does support the Iranian people and their rights rather that close their eyes and block their ears just for the sake of economic benefits and cheap oil.
