Unforgettable hockey players

by Ivan-ac

This season the NHL is introducing Reebok's new slimmer jerseys with "wicking" materials that help keep moisture away from the body. Whether we like all of the redesigns or not is a matter for another post, but I'm truly beginning to feel that the timing will serve as a ready-made historic signpost to the start of a new golden era in the NHL.

I think that in 20 or 30 years I'll remember these slim jerseys came out just about the time that some of the best players ever were coming up. Sidney Crosby will absolutely become one of the greatest ever, and is very likely to break several of "The Great One's" records along the way. The Stall brothers,(of which there will be 4), will probably emerge as a rock steady "family trademarked" presence wherever they each may be around the league at any given time. Such a true family presence hasn't really been seen since the Sutters. Then there are 2 very special defencemen with the surname of Johnson, as well. Though no relation, Erik and Jack both look to be future superstars. And the amazing Alex Ovechkin. Who looks like Jagr in his absolute prime but with heart, desire and that all important edge.

And keep in mind, there are dozens of superbly skilled young stars like: Malkin, Kovalchuk, Heatley, Spezza, Vanek, Boumeester, Luongo, Hossa, Havlat and so many more, who's stock continue to rise, though they've already separated themselves from other terrific young players. These players are in a far rarer class and I sincerely doubt we've seen the best of any of them yet.

Then there are your super highly touted prospects. Patrick Kane was the talk of last years draft and looks to be a terrific talent. John Tavaras is probably two years from being drafted, though efforts continue to get an age restriction exemption for the unbelievably skilled youngster, who's birthday falls a week after the NHL's cut-off. This would allow him to be in the draft next summer, where he would almost certainly be the top rated prospect, and garner the coveted number one overall pick. He looks to be another of the rarest bread. The next, next one, if you will.

And then there's Jayce Hawryluk. If you don't know his name, just wait a few years. This kid scores the most jaw-dropping goals you've ever seen. And he scores them on college goalies. He puts up video game type numbers in actual games with kids just a little older than he is, too. If you don't want to wait to see him in action, Check him out on youtube. There's lots there.

With so much talent on the horizon, I really do think these coming years will be some of hockeys greatest yet. Other nations are turning out the best prospects they ever have, as well. America has really developed their grass roots and collegiate systems well and are now reaping the rewards with some of the best young talent they've ever put out, in quality as well as quantity. And with more nations than ever having representation in the NHL superstars of today, and as these nations embrace their stars as a matter of national pride, Respect and eventually Passion for the sport will inevitably grow.

These names will also be remembered as greats. And by more than ever.
