In the 19th century, women were solely meant to stay at home and take care of their families. Women stepped out of this "model" when they joined the workplace; they became more educated, and began to provide for themselves, otherwise known as the "corporate mom" today. At first people disapproved and many women were viewed as outcasts, witches, or even disowned by their families. While some women believed what people were saying about them and others, these events made them stronger. The stronger women slowly made the many changes and inroads into a predominately male dominated society paving the road for the modern women of today. The middle to upper class women had better means to "go" their own way, while the poorer women had many more obstacles to overcome.
Women began to take roles in a previously male dominated society; this in turn led to the beginning of equitable rights for women through a long and arduous journey.
A "corporate mom" faces many issues today such as career advancement and balancing work life and home life. I am sure these problems could affect everyone, not only women, in different ways. Women of different classes experience the same issues. I do not feel that it matters what particular class someone "belongs" to because everyone faces the same types of problems. Although, the issues may be an added challenge for women of different classes to overcome, each individual must conquer their battles and strive to do the best they can.
Women always have a hard time balancing work life and home life. Women that are older may be more apt to have older children that can help them, whereas women that are younger, most likely have children that are younger which can lead to additional challenges including daycare, homework, housework, and school functions.
Career advancement was definitely an issue for most women; it was hard to even get a job in the past, much less worry about advancing in a career. Women have always desired an education and often had to worry about how to reach their goals while struggling with numerous hurdles. In the colonial times, balancing work life and home life was never an issue, because the woman's role was to take care of the children and the home. Unfortunately, women still face many of the same issues today as in the past by being a corporate mom.
