Jogging on roads is safe if you take the proper precautions. Almost anything can be dangerous if you are careless about it. Some basic safety precautions are:
1. Always jog or walk on the LEFT side of the road, facing traffic. The only exception to this is if there is a sidewalk on the right side of the road.
2. Be aware of your surroundings. Avoid jogging by houses with threatening dogs or on roads with heavy traffic. Select your route judiciously.
3. Go jogging in the day time hours when visibility is best. If you do go at night or in the early morning wear bright, reflective clothing and a light.
4. Do NOT wear headphones. You need to be aware of your surroundings(cars, people, dogs, etc.) in order to avoid potential danger.
There are some safety tips that extend to runners no matter where or when you are running: on the road, on a trail or on a track. If you run by yourself, take precautions to ensure your safety.
1. Let someone know where you're going, and a general idea of when you'll get back. Your family or roommates should know if you're doing a 2 mile or 20 mile training run.
2. Be aware of the weather. Very hot and very cold weather can be dangerous, and sometimes you don't realize how extreme the conditions are until you're out in them, four miles from home. Prepare with appropriate clothing and hydration.
3. Take a cell phone. Phones are light, small and can be easily carried or stashed in a fuel belt. Your phone will come in handy if you are in a compromised situation, or even if you get a cramp mid-way through your run.
4. Carry identification. Put an id tag on your shoe with phone numbers and emergency contact information.
Running is so great for your health and by taking simple precautions it doesn't have to be a safety hazard.
