How to prepare your family for hiking trips

Hiking can be enjoyable for the whole family with just a little planning. In preparing for your outing you must first have a clear understanding of where you are going. Do a little research on the area that you will be hiking. Locate maps or guide books if you are journeying on a long trail or unfamiliar terrain.

Many popular trails have brochures with simple maps or informative sign boards at the trail-heads. I recommend that you use this information if it is available so that you can have a more pleasurable experience. It is wise to choose a trail that is comfortable for all members of your party. A difficult and strenuous hike in the middle of the Summer heat may put hiking on the bottom of the list next trip.

Also, consider that young children may have boosts of energy but, many are not as excited as you are about a long hike unless there is plenty to do along the way.

Before you leave the car or your camp you should plan on bringing a small backpack or day-pack to carry the following basic items with you; Sunscreen, Lip balm or chap-stick, Mosquito repellent, snacks or lunch and plenty of water. You may carry a water filter to eliminate carrying the extra weight if you know for sure that you will find water.

Do not forget to bring your map and do not put it in your pocket; it will probably begin to dissolve from perspiration after a few miles of hiking. Add to your pack an extra pair of socks to change out of in case your feet get wet. Do not wear two pair of socks inside of your hiking shoes; this will lead to soaking feet and blisters. Regarding shoes, you do not have to wear heavy hiking boots unless you are climbing a peak or plan to be on a rugged trail. You can often wear tennis shoes but for longer hikes you would be more comfortable in an approach shoe or a light weight hiking boot. This footwear will be more than adequate for most trails.

If you are traveling in the mountains you will need to add a few more items to your pack. Remember to wear a hat or sunglasses or both. Bring a compass and a wind shell or poncho. Thunderstorms brew out of nowhere very quickly and you may find yourself running for shelter in a lightning storm as you are being pelted by large hailstones. The compass will be helpful if you find yourself lost in case you leave the trail and if the visibility is poor. I would recommend reading up on dealing with bear encounters if they are in the area.

Summer in the mountains can be much cooler or warmer than you might think depending on the weather. Even on a clear day you may find it rather cool in the early morning when you start out and hot in the afternoon so dress accordingly. You can always be safe dressing in layers so that they can be added or removed to keep you more comfortable. Getting a weather forecast for the area you are heading to can help you in deciding what clothing you may need to bring.

To truly enjoy your hiking experience do not be in too big a hurry to get from point A to point B and always allow plenty of time to complete your adventure. You can make the most out of your trip by being fully prepared. The more you know about the trail you are hiking and the duration; the better you can plan it out.
