The final week before a move is crucial to the successful execution of your grand plan. You have put-off many things; you have delayed, waited and postponed. Only you know what kind of chaotic monstrosity your grand plan has evolved into. Relax. You now have a list to help you through these amazingly stressful days.
Every bill you receive represents a relationship which you must either sever or continue. Buy a strip of stamps and start licking them because the electric, gas, phone and cable companies will each need to receive a signed letter from you.
Next, your subscriptions will all have to be continued to your new address. This includes your newspaper, magazines and (more importantly) your medications. Make necessary phone calls on each of these and set yourself up for comfort at the new house. Have you obtained a referral for a new doctor, yet? If not, simply call your current doctors and tell them your plans, request referrals and leave your new address and phone number on the recording (if you can't get through at this point.) Move on!
Think about delivery-related businesses: the milk man, the UPS man, and the Fed Ex guy. Each of these delivery-people can help you with updating your account and reducing your headaches next week. If you are accustomed to sending out packages every week, you will be frustrated unless you get busy setting yourself up for next week.
Get out your address book and do a quick inventory of who might need an update regarding your whereabouts. You don't have to call or write everyone; make a few essential notifications.
Say good-bye to your neighbors and pass around your new address. You will feel forgotten and dismissed (even though you are the one who left) if none of your old neighbors notice that you moved. Say good-bye over a pizza, phone call or e-mail. Do something to memorialize the relationships that you may have created as a result of proximity.
Say hello to the new people on your new list. Did you have a surprisingly short list of old neighbors to say good-bye to? Start a new trend now. Make some new friends; get some addresses from the curb and buy some flowers and scotch and send them around to your new neighbors. You have made promises to yourself regarding your new neighborsstart keeping them.
Get real with your family. This is important stuff, here. Talk to your significant other and your children about what your expectations are regarding your new home. Setup camp for yourself and encourage each of them to do the same.
