Packing for a ski vacation is similar to packing for the beach. Yes, the beach! Bring sunscreen, lip protection and sunglasses along with your flip flops and swimsuit for soaking in the hot tub after a day on the slopes. Higher altitudes have thin dry air and snow covered slopes that reflect the sun, making it essential to protect your eyes and skin from the damaging UV rays.
For the slopes, pack layering clothing, head and hand coverings for the cold elements. Clothing and coverings with moisture wicking power will keep you most comfortable as will a variety of venting zippers on your outside layers. Pack ski socks that have the proper padding where it is most needed to keep you comfortable. Gloves that are made up of layers will give you options for comfort throughout the day. Bring at least two pairs of gloves (keep one for a spare in your locker at the ski resort). Don't forget ski goggles with UV protection.
To keep your boots and gloves damp free, bring along a portable folding boot/glove dryer to use each night. Bring extra plastic bags large enough to pack wet clothing, for the trip home, in your suitcase.
Ski resort towns are known to be laid back casual areas, so bring casual clothing to use out and about while in town. Hopefully, you can make double use of these items also. Use a down vest or fleece jacket acting as your outer wear during the night and for your middle layer on the slopes .Bring clothes to lounge in your room that could also double as your first layer. The more clothes you pack that will do double duty; the better off you will be to be prepared to have more choices for comfort during changing weather conditions.
Whatever you decide to pack, make sure you keep in mind how you will be traveling. Airplanes and shuttles have limits on the amount of luggage one can bring and rental cars have limited space in the trunk. This should help you decide whether to tow along all of your personal ski gear or look for a good rental deal on equipment. Rentals can give you the perfect opportunity to try out the latest equipment!
When traveling to high altitude areas, be aware of the expanding molecules and in some cases rupturing containers of any liquid items that you carry in your luggage. Place all these items in clear plastic zipper lock bags to prevent finding a mess and allow space for expansion in the containers before you leave home.
Whatever you choose to pack to wear on the slopes, make it comfortable and flexible to change. You don't have to necessarily have the most up to date look to have a good time on the slopes, so don't break the bank. Enjoy your trip making new tracks in the snow instead of the sandy beach!
