Effective communication is essential for any professional who wants to achieve success and thrive in their career. It is important for business as well. The art of communicating provides an exchange of thoughts, feelings and ideas. Relationships and business partnerships can fail as a result of inadequate communication.
Employee behavior and performance can benefit from the sharing of feedback, as long as it done in an appropriate manner. In these situations, communication needs to be constructive, not destructive. It can then result in positive behavioral changes and employee growth.
Communication offers a sense of great power for those who know how to be effective in the exchange of information. Employee morale can be enhanced by reflecting the company's core values and sharing the details of important business transactions. The community and marketplace are provided with a representation of the company's overall image by the ways in which it deals with the community and markets its products and services.
One of the most fundamental aspects in communicating is to understand that people respond different based personal traits and characteristics. There are several methods for identifying the best tools to ensure you can have efficient discussions with anyone.
If we can assess the individual traits and personal attributes of each team member, we can identify the most effective method of communication to ensure successful communication. Based on the fundamentals of who we are, there is a preferred style of how we each process and convey information to guarantee that our message will be expressed.
In my previous employment with a global firm, our Director provided copies of a very effective book which enabled us to evaluate our team. It was called "Please Understand Me: Character and Temperament Types," written by David Keirsey and Marilyn Bates. The book included a test and evaluation form. We were each asked to complete the test and score our answers.
The final score provided the character and temperament type specific to each of us. Once we had determined our types, a chart was then published at an off-site training session. This was a very valuable experience, as we studied the details of the various types applicable within our team. It gave us a clear understanding of different thought processes and communication vehicles which made us more effective. It also helped us understand why we had experienced so much conflict in our interpersonal
