What are the best books to learn about home network security?

by Rick H. Blase

Created on: August 27, 2007

Home networking security can be a daunting task for the uninitiated. One has a sense of accomplishment just getting the darned thing to work. But once it's working, you start reading or hearing all those horror stories of people who have been hacked or lost their information by some nefarious means. So looking for a good book is an excellent way of either confirming that you did it right or finding a solution to something you should have done. Here are my best picks for meeting the two criteria above:

1. "Home Network Security Simplified" by Jim Doherty and Neil Anderson. This book is an excellent manual that is very simple and straight forward. It has plenty of pictures and an excellent description of how to turn encryption on for your network. That is probably the hardest thing to understand or do and this book makes it very clear with step by step instructions.

2. "Home Networking Demystified" by Larry E. Long is another excellent reference. This book takes an indepth look at all aspects of your home network including wired and wireless, design, equipment, and possible uses of your new home network. This is an excellent read if you are just starting out and what to understand all aspects of your new home network.

3. "Complete Wireless Home Networking" by Paul Heltzel. A lot of people know the basics of a wired home network but they want to add a wireless feature. This book tells you everything you want to know from the ins and outs of wireless and how to make the most of it. It is an excellent reference book and highly recommended.

You can find these and many other offerings on the Internet or at your local library or book store. While installing a home network may seem intimidating, with the right resources, anyone can do it and do it right.
