Tips for finding support as a single parent

Created on: August 27, 2007

There is nothing more life-changing than suddenly becoming a single parent. Few women have designs on giving birth to children on their own. As deadbeat dads continue running from responsibilities, single mothers are left to fend for themselves. Without financial assistance, these families would struggle throughout their lives. Here are some outlets that can rescue single mothers dealing with children and being destitute.

Battered women shelters

These safe havens are found all over the country. For years, they've offered emergency and temporary housing for at-risk families. Iowa has plenty like the YWCA, Berne Laurens, Beacon of Light and House of Mercy. Domestic violence and child protection have nationwide priority. Abused mothers have shelters for a quick outlet.

Friends: You can always count on one or two good friends to give rides, loan money and watch your kids while you look for work. Some friends could move you in for a few weeks. However, be careful not to take advantage of these friends. After getting on your feet, be sure to repay their kindness.

SupportKids.org and other organizations: Child support has always belonged to the kids. If your baby's father doesn't want to step up, get the government to provide that nudge. If the child or children are his, get that money! SupportKids are experts at recovering overdue support. SupportKids will check for his employment, dock his wages and put out a warrant for being in the rears. You can also go to your state welfare organization and track a deadbeat's last employment. If successful, rearages may be placed on his past earnings to his future earnings. Going through the state usually takes a lengthy time. Sometimes, patience pays off.

Family: Going back home can be a humbling and humiliating experience. But, embarrassment is better than living poor on the street. Would you rather sleep in your bed and take out the garbage? Or sleep in a bed made of garbage? Your parents' rules may be hard to deal with, but so is searching for a place to lay you and your child's head.

Remember these outlets because it's not just about you anymore.
