Is Buddhism a religion or a way of life

Buddhism is at the same time a major world religion and also a way of life. Traditionally Buddhism has been one of the major religions of many Eastern societies. Many practices such as meditation and following the teachings of Buddha were only known and utilized by those who called themselves Buddhist.

With the advent of globalization however many of these practices are becoming more known in western culture. Many people including Christians incorporate practices such as meditation into their spiritual lives. Their core beliefs may still center around another religion besides Buddhism, but ideas such as simplicity and mindfulness can enhance ones spirituality no matter what their beliefs.

Buddhism in religious terms means that one practicing it follows the teachings of Sidhartha. Buddhism in practical terms can be applied to anyone who may practice some of the rituals but not necessarily devote their entire philosophy to Sidhartha's teachings. The beautiful thing about Buddhism is that is is not evangelical. People are free to follow Buddhism or its teachings in whatever fashion, and at whatever pace they wish.
