The question, "Will political setbacks for stem cell advocates destroy medical research efforts?" is skewed and biased to begin with; it starts from the jumped-to-assumption that ALL stem cell research is under "political" scrutiny
as a fact, and therefore, such "political" scrutiny will cause "political setbacks" for ALL stem cell research.

The question reeks of liberal dogmatic "secret code", implying that ALL stem cell research has come under attack by the vast right wing pro-life "machine", and that this unfeeling machine will likely prevent the cure of dreaded diseases such as Parkinson's.

This assumption forgets that there is stem cell research being done on a daily basis involving umbilical cord stem cells, and even adult stem cells. This research does not involve the destruction of life - at any stage of development - whatsoever. As such, these types of stem cell research will suffer precious few "political setbacks", and actually show the most promise for advancement of science and medical breakthroughs.

It is only the malicious, willful and wanton destruction of the stem cells from embryos that fuels the controversy. In fact, while I'm dancing around it, let's abort the use of the word "embryonic" in favor of the phrase "the embryo's". If we can attach ownership to these stem cells, personifying the "host" embryo who has "volunteered" these stem cells, PERHAPS we can begin to stem the tide... (by the way, when was the last time you saw an embryo "volunteer" to be slaughtered to donate his or her stem cells to science?

Having better identified the true intent of the question, let me ask another:

Would parental setbacks for junk food advocates destroy the evening meal?

No. Junk food is just that, junk food, and the attempts to eliminate junk foods as an alternative to a sound healthy diet makes a whole lot of sense.

And the notion of creating new strains of embryonic stem cells for the sole purpose of destroying the life force cradled in each embryo for the purpose of "experimentation"; no matter the outcome of the experimentation, makes NO sense, and will forever smack of the brutality and evil represented by Josef Mengele during the Holocaust.

When the US Constitution holds that, "all men are created equal", how can we not look to the created embryo and see the penultimate equality? Even at two cells, we are all alike, we are all "endowed by our Creator" the unalienable right first and foremost - of LIFE, then liberty
