How to help your child with writing

The first step to be successful in writing is to also be an avid reader. The more your child reads others' stories and words the better understanding they will have about writing their own. Another helpful hint is to keep writing fun and entertaining. If a child sees writing as just another educational activity they may not be as apt to write. The question is how do can you as a parent keep writing and reading entertaining for them?

Below are some ideas to keep the writing experience entertaining. The more they write the better they will become at it. As the old saying goes "practice makes perfect."

1. Start reading to your child as young as possible. My grandmother still tells me how she started reading books to me when I was barely two weeks old. I love reading and have since I was a young child. Once your child is old enough to draw pictures and talk but not quite old enough to write ask them to explain the picture to you and write the words for them. Another option is to ask them to tell you a story and write it down for them.

2. If you have a aspiring artist on your hands but not such an avid writer ask them to write a description or a story below each of their drawings.

3. Have your child make their own books with drawing and writing in them. The subject can be about what ever they are willing to write. If no ideas come to mind some examples are: A Book About Me, My Pet, My Family, etc.

4. Keep plenty of books, paper, and pencils around the house and in sight of your children. As another saying goes, "out of sight out of mind."

5. Have your kids keep a journal. It can have everything they wish to write in them from their poems to everyday tales.

6. Ask your child to write "reviews". They can review anything from a movie they just watched or a CD they recently bought. It will get them thinking about their opinions and getting them down on paper.

7. Set aside a time for reading everyday. Most kids often read before bedtime.

As long as reading and writing are incorporated into a child's daily life improvement should progress. Keep it fresh and interesting. The less a child sees writing and reading as a chore the more they will want to do it.
