The original Hampton Inn was opened in Memphis, Tennessee in the summer of 1984. It was a two story building that included 128 guest rooms. The Hampton Inns were originally operated by the Promus Hotel Corporation of Memphis,TN., which also owned Embassy Suites and Doubletree Hotels.
The Hampton Inns and Suites are now operated by the Hilton Hotels Corporation, and as of April 2007 have approximately 1,399 properties. In the past few years the company has gone through two major renovations. In 2004, Hilton kicked off a major public realations campaign with the slogan "Make it Hampton". The renovation included the installation of curved shower curtain rods in the guest bathrooms, the inclusion of hot-items to the daily continental breakfast, and the brand new "Cloud-Nine Experience" which would kick off the second phase of the renovations. In 2007, Hampton replaced every bed in the Hampton Chain with new Sealy pillow-top mattresses and box springs.
