If you're paying for the education why wouldn't you try hard to make good grades? Why would you want to waste your money taking a class you don't need. It's your life and to live with failure will always follow you around. Not to mention that most collages have an academic policy that requires you to keep a certain grade point average in order to continue being a student. Most collages offer free tutoring for anyone who needs it, to help reassure that you succeed.
Many employers ask for a copy of your transcript, this allows them to judge how well you will work. Your grades are not only the basis for how much you've learned but also how well you preform. You are not only graded on your papers and test but on if you turn them in on time and how much effort you put in to them and how well you do under pressure, the same effort, punctuality, and how you handle under pressure that your future employers will be looking for. In effect the better you do in school the better you look in the eyes of your employers. Work hard in the classroom and you will get the better opportunities in your career.
If you are not doing well in your classes it may be a sign that you should be doing something else. A good example would be a student taking classes in Child Education and not making the grade because they are really not as interested in the field as they thought they would be. Or a student that is learning to become a nurse but has an aversion to blood. If you are unhappy with your career choice now your grades will show it. Ask yourself if you're grades are reflecting what career you should or should not be studying.
Don't forget that this is your life and if you still wonder if grades are important then you may need to get a job and hold off on school for a while.
