How to introduce your new pet rabbit to your cat

So you've decided that a pet rabbit is right for you and your family. Safely introducing your new rabbit to your existing cat is the next step. Now there are many arguments for both sides of this debate. Many say that it's just too dangerous to have a natural predator around natural prey. I tend to disagree.

Cats by nature are predators. This same nature also makes them loners. Cats will usually retreat from a fight rather than engage in it. Also, with purely indoor cats, there is a disconnect between how your cat reacts to things indoors and how they would react in the backyard. This works to the pet owners advantage. Likewise, while rabbits are natural prey, they are also social animals. They live in groups called herds. In such social infrastructures, rabbits must assert their personalities to gain territory and mates. This is what can make even the smallest rabbit aggressive should he or she feel threatened or neglected.

When your cat and rabbit meet for the first time, specifically when both of out a cage, it is one of those situations that can defy everyone's expectations. It is important that the rabbit feel secure around the cat before it is left to its own defenses without the protection of its cage. Your cat will be curious; let them be but not at the expense of the rabbits safety or sanity. If the rabbit is not startled or scared at being approached by the cat, let your cat advance and acquaint himself. Rabbits are just as curious as cats and will probably return the action. Seperate them immediately if your cat tries to pounce. Most likely, this will not happen since you wouldn't introduce them if you thought it was how your cat would react.

Once your rabbit has grown accustomed to daily life in his new home, it is helpful if he can come to recognize the place he is let out of his cage to play in as his own territory. It will bring your rabbit comfort and also allow a little extra safety. For example, if your cat comes into the rabbits territory and tries to play with him or do anything to "invade", the rabbit is more likely to become aggressive and push him out. Most rabbits will not fight to the death over a water bowl or a gentle pawing, but it will be enough to let your cat know there are boundaries. Most cats will spend more time watching than interacting with your rabbit, while the rabbit entertains himself with his toys. Both species spend a good deal napping as well. After a while, you may even notice the cat and the rabbit napping together when they are feeling more docile.

Please take note that the safest thing that can be done for your rabbit is to carefully consider the personality of both your pets. Give them a chance to figure it out for themselves, because they may surprise you, but you cannot force them to change. Take every precaution to ensure the health of both your pets. Still, with the right pets, the right owner, and the right care, both cats and rabbits can happily share the same space.
