Dining tips to avoid offending waiters, who may retaliate

by JSmooth

Waiters will not retaliate if you offend them. I have worked as a server for 8 years and have been treated like crap many times. No matter what, I never did anything to the food or drinks of the customers. You have to treat people the way you would want to be treated. If you're offended, remember to act morally respectful. There are tips that will show that you appreciate the service that you're receiving.

When you order, don't request too many special instructions. Changing the order and requiring to have your food specially prepared is a perfect way to frustrate your server. Think about it. The server caters to 6 tables and you require so much attention. Every time you see the server, you want something. The burger wasn't cooked right. The steak is undercooked or too well done. The drink doesn't contain enough alcohol. A sandwich should be a simple order for a server. If the customer wants to change the bread, remove the onions, mayonnaise on side, lettuce on side, no mustard, fries well done, no seasoning and other special instructions for one sandwich. If you don't like onions, then mention that. If you want no tomatoes, no lettuce, no onions, you should just request all produce items on the side. If you want a dozen special instructions, just stay at home and cook. Imagine if you were in a party of 50 and everyone wanted special instructions.

Respect the server and don't think that waiting is their future. They are most likely in college and may be more educated than you. If my case, I served in the Air Force and earned two A.A. degrees and a B.A. People would treat me like I was a loser. One time a military party was dining upstairs and one female customer asked when I was going to do something productive as I could never compare to the service members. Don't judge people because you will contradict yourself.

Tip accordingly when you receive good service. Taking up the server's time, disrespecting them and then you give a cheap tip. Remember to treat others the way that you would want to be treated. If you're rude enough, maybe something could happen to your food. Anything is possible if you find a way to be the worst customer.

Attempt to be a good guest. Don't run the server back and forth. If you need something, ask for it when they take your order or wait until you need multiple items. Also, don't use your cell phone and expect the server to come back at your convenience. Make eye contact and respect the server. Talking on the phone and ignoring the server is bad table manners. Many customers don't understand how terrible they are. There should be a school that teaches customers how to act when they dine out.

When you dine out, treat the restaurant staff the way you would want to be treated. Think about how you feel at your job. Servers may not like their job. Usually waiters will not retaliate, but if you are rude enough, anything is possible.
