Biography: Boudicca - Queen of the Iceni

Queen Boudicca was a member of the Iceni tribe in Wast England. Her husband was Prasutagus, who was head of the Iceni tribe. When the Romans invaded Britain in 43 CE most of the Celtic tribes had to submit, but the Romans allowed two to keep most of their power. One of these tribes was that of Prastagus. In 47 CE the Iceni were disarmed by the Romans. Prastagus was given a grant by the Romans who later said that it was actually a loan. When Prastagus died in 60 CE he had to give half his kingdom to the Romans to settle the debt. When the Romans came to collect they took the whole kingdom. The Romans beat Boudicca publicly, raped her two daughters and siezed the wealth of most of the Iceni. The royal family was then sold into slavery. Boudicca led about 100,000 soldiers and attacked Camulodunum, and easily won because most of the Romans were off fighting in Wales. Boudicca burned Camulodunum to the ground. She then marched on Londinium and burned it down also, along with Verulamium. Towards the end of the fighting Boudicca started relying on Roman food stores, and the Romans knew this so they started destroying excess food. During her last battle, which the location is not known, Boudicca led what was left of her 100,000 uphill against 1200 Romans. Her army was exhausted and weak, and the Romans won easily killing around 80,000. After this battle many historians believe Boudicca went back to her homelands and took poison to avoid Roman capture.
