Are Manchester United considering new strikers

Before the start of the season, it was widely accepted that Manchester United had the finest squad in the country. Yet after a poor start which has seen one goal result in just two points from their first three games, it is now considered that Sir Alex Ferguson needs to buy one more striker.

Whilst it can't be argued that the addition of Tottenham Hotspur's Dimitar Berbatov or Nicolas Anelka of Bolton Wanderers to name just two would be handy signings, it isn't as vital as many pundits believe.

Carlos Tevez was always going to start slow, and we may only see the best of him in a few weeks time. The Argentine has barely had a break since leading West Ham United to safety last season, as he played in the Copa America in the summer and returned to England with his future in limbo as the controversy over his move to Old Trafford laboured on.

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer and Louis Saha, whilst by no means reliable enough to be available for every game, are on the road back to full fitness with the Frenchman expected to play some part against Spurs on Sunday. If Saha can remain fit for two months, this will then coincide with the return of Wayne Rooney.

The England international is by far the most important striker the Reds have, and his injury was a huge blow. After finally getting a full pre-season in for the first time in his United career, it was going to be a big season for the youngster and it still will be once he is back in action.

And then there is Cristiano Ronaldo. Ferguson has often suggested the Portuguese international will eventually become a natural central player, and after topping the goalscoring charts for the club last season, who can argue with that? The former Sporting Lisbon ace is currently out through suspension, yet should be back after the international break.

So whilst a new striker would be welcome, to suggest it is vital is a tad misleading.
