All she wanted was Cheerios for breakfast for the last 5 days, why not today? As the mom of an almost 2-year old, I am fascinated every day with her behavior- the way it fluctuates from perfect little princess to an evil monster that won't give me a minute to even pee in private. My daughter amazes me with her knowledge and ability to remember the funniest little things. Of course, I think she's a genius, but doesn't every mom think their kid's the smartest one on the block?
After 5-days in a row of eating Cheerios and milk for breakfast, my little angel made the decision to throw her Strawberry Shortcake feeding bowl on the floor and request "PANCAKES!" at the top of her lungs. Shocked, I submit to the screaming fit she's presenting for all of they neighbors to hear and stick some mini pancakes in the microwave as I then fall to my knees to clean up the mess under her highchair- all the while she's tapping me on the head with her milk-covered dinosaur spoon.
What is this all about? Who is this creature I gave birth to that is now ruling every day of my life? I thought my mom had told me everything! These past two years of raising this child has taught me four really interesting things: #1, that NO ONE, not even your own mother (and especially not your mother in law!) can ever tell you what to expect when you have your own. #2: you know those people who say, "oh, you have to have a baby, it's so great!", yeah, they're all NUTS! The sleepless nights and Teletubbies have all turned them into baby-zombies. They just want you to join their exclusive club so can be as nutty as they are! Because, you see, they were duped too! #3: I now have feelings for those parents of the kids that are screaming in a restaurant or department store. Part of me actually wants to go over and help them out, in an effort to save them some sanity. And finally, #4: To this day, my boobs tingle when a baby cries.
Don't get me wrong, I don't at all regret having our daughter. She is the most beautiful, wonderful little girl you could ever imagine-most of the time. i consider myself very lucky when I hear the baby-zombies telling tales of their kids misbehavior. I guess I was just mis-informed from the get-go. I expected it to be hard, and tiring and trying, but this journey of ours has definitely been a roller coaster ride, that I'm sure will not end until someone throws up!
If you want to know the truth about motherhood, just ask me. I won't sugar-coat it.
