I am an Aussie, and I am proud to be living in the most livable country in the world.
Australian's are very very fortunate that we have a mix of everything in our own back yard. There's the bush or outback, the beaches, the snowy mountains. We have it all at our fingertips.
No matter where you may travel you will open your eyes in wonder at the beauty that is free to everyone to enjoy.
Our overseas friends may still think that we are some poky little backwater that doesn't have electricity and we all have pet Kangaroos. But how incorrect that is. We have beautiful cities, some super chic like Melbourne, some fast and fun - Sydney some country like, such as Brisbane then there are all the regional cities. No matter where you go you'll always find something interesting.
The people of Australia are just plain nice, friendly happy people. Well about 99.9% of us anyway. There will always be the minority who might not be so nice to be around but most countries around the world have their fair share of these types.
The crime rate isn't as bad either, and even though there has been some negative events happening in recent years, it doesn't mean it happens all the time. We all take risks where ever we go we just have to be positive that we don't have an accident or something whilst visiting a foreign country.
At times we are affectionately called "ockers". We use quite a bit of slang which is funny and you wouldn't be an Aussie if you didn't. Words like Sheila (female), boof head (idiot), and don't forget "mate" - friend. The list is endless and it is such a laugh to hear it. We do say "gidday", arvo for afternoon, "she'll be right mate". Some say we are the way we are because we are actually up side down to the rest of the world and the blood has rushed to our heads and never goes down again.. Yes I am being serious.
I guess you all know of our most famous character Mr Steve Urwin, who sadly passed away. What a great tragedy that was. His death is something that will be burned into our hearts forever. I believe his death was just as senseless as Princess Diana's. The impact it had on everyone was incredible. But Steve was Aussie through and through. He was what an Australian is all about. His "Crikey Mate" is typical of the majority of Aussies. We even have a new chant at Sporting events - "Aussie Aussie Aussie oi oi oi". Who ever thought it up was a genius. It is silly but makes us feel just that....An Aussie.
