How to find a qualified babysitter

It isn't easy to leave our children. We wish we could keep them attached by an umbilical cord their whole lives. We want to know our kids are always safe, but sometimes, this isn't an easy task. We've all heard the stories of the crazy babysitters that have harmed kids and we hope within hope that never happens to us. Of course, all people aren't bad but Mary Poppins might not come along anytime soon, either.

First and foremost, make a list of your requirements. What do you expect out of a babysitter? Now that you know what you are looking for, stick to it and do not settle. If you have worries, then find someone else. Your kids aren't worth the risk. There is someone out there who has all the qualities you are looking for.

Put the word out. Run an ad in the local paper, community bulletins, public access television, and other places that the ad may get seen. You may even want to check your child's school. They sometimes, have parents who are looking for extra income through babysitting. List your requirements and ask for only serious inquiries.

Word of mouth is also a great tool in babysitter shopping. Ask friends, family members, and neighbors for suggestions. Visit your local department of human services for a list of their approved child care providers. You may also want to check with local daycare centers and church groups. You may have to shop around to find what you really want.

Interview potential babysitters. Ask questions and provide mock situations. You can learn many things about someone when you first meet them. Talk to them and see if you can pick up on their personality and nature. Run reference and background checks. It is better safe than sorry. If this person is the right caregiver for you, they will understand that you just want to be careful. It is up to you to make sure your child gets the best care possible when you are not around.

Most small children and animals are good judges of character. Introduce the potential babysitter to your kids and pets and see what happens. This isn't always a fail proof way but you at least get a general idea of opinions developed about the person in question. If your child doesn't like the person, this is usually not a good sign.

Local high school students might be a good option. Many teens baby-sit for extra money. Try to find someone who is mature and responsible. Check with the child-care or home-making classes for teens with the most potential. You may even want to ask a family member to stay with your kids. Just make sure that it is someone you can trust.

Another option is to start a babysitting circle with other parents. Alternate nights to watch each other's kids so that everybody gets a little time away. This is a terrific idea and helps out all people involved.
No matter what you decide, keep in mind, that you can always change your mind later on. If the babysitter you choose isn't right for your family, there is no shame in letting them go and finding someone who is. Keep looking and you will surely find the perfect nanny for your precious babies.
